Do I understand this right:
Each of PLIST, DESCR and MESSAGE will then be subject to variable
substitution, and I don't have to do anything special (any more) for DESCR
and MESSAGE files? 

If so, this is definitely a win!

Maybe add INSTALL and DEINSTALL, too.

Um, is this used else where? If not, I don't see much of a win in
introducing that.
