I'm too tired for words, therefore just some numbers:
FreeBSD: 2711 ports since 1994/08/21
NetBSD: 1060 pkgs since 1997/08/20
OpenBSD: 567 ports since 1996/06/03 (*)
(*) Did OpenBSD really have ports before NetBSD? (This is from
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/share/mk/bsd.port.mk?rev=1.1)
Taking average port growth/year, I'm impressed by the fact we're keeping
up with FreeBSD. :)
