Look at library_names_spec in your libtool.

a.out:

library_names_spec='${libname}${release}.so$versuffix ${libname}.so$versuffix'  

ELF:

library_names_spec='${libname}${release}.so$versuffix ${libname}${release}.so$major ${libname}${release}.so ${libname}.so'

where
   ${release} is the argument to -release, and
   $versuffix is ${maj}.${min} from -version-info ${maj}:${min}:${age}

NetBSD doesn't use ${age}.
