Hmmm... that's either very wrong, or very short-sighted, or both.
I've been using them all along in pkgsrc modules I write. They still
work very well
I've done a "s/REQ/REQUIRE/g" in bsd.pkg.mk though to correct their
less-than-intelligent/consistent naming....

If the *policy* is to not write more of them then that's either very
short-sighted, stupid, or both! ;-) (and it's an undocumented policy!)
They were apparently designed for the very reason this thread is talking
about, and as I say they work very very well for that purpose.
