I did it in bsd.prefs.mk instead:
.elif ${OPSYS} == "Linux"
LOWER_OPSYS?= linux
LOWER_ARCH!= echo "${LOWER_ARCH}" | sed -e 's/i.86/i386/'
MACHINE_ARCH!= echo "${MACHINE_ARCH}" | sed -e 's/i.86/i386/'
(Because I think it should work with old or different bmake also.)
