i suspect that the definition of MESA_REQD, currently defined in
bsd.pkg.defaults.mk, is in the wrong place.

i got this idea from noting that lintpkgsrc's output indicated that a
version 3.4.2 was required for a few pkgs, whereas i have 5.0
installed.  lintpkgsrc doesn't scan bsd.pkg.defaults.mk, but it does
scan bsd.prefs.mk and look for variables that are of the form
/_REQD$/.
