For the long term, this should be fixed by submitting a change to libtool's
acinclude.m4, so that packages will begin picking it up. On *BSD, at least,
sysctl is good enough and can be set up that way in libtool directly.
Libtool's autoconf fragment should be smart enough to know that (and already
has some OS-specific settings of that value built in).
