ok, 5.6 built cleanly, so i put that on for the meantime so i can not rush and
try and get this dealt with.
is this something that is going to require patches for configure stuff? i'm
not setting -O2 anywhere, but it's getting built that way. i'd rather be able
to submit a fix that just whine about it.
