Okay, I got pango to build/install by installing the gnu binutils out of
pkgsrc (devel/binutils), and pressing /usr/pkg{bin,sbin} to the front of
my PATH.

So, I suppose there is a problem with the openbsd linker (maybe dealing
with the multiple levels of symlinks in the x11-links wrapper stuff?)

Anyways, just posting this here as some kind of resolution to the
problem.
