Yes, awhois just uses the base-OS "whois" command, and it expects to
find one very much like the traditional BSD version (it must support the
'-h' flag to specify the server -- that flag is always used).
I'm somewhat flabbergasted that there's a package for my little old
script in the first place though. I never even noticed it before! ;-)
I haven't touched awhois, let alone used it myself, for many years now.
I wasn't even really using it myself when I made the last release. Not
so long ago I was actually thinking of removing it from the FTP sites
since it almost certainly gives poor results these days. However I'm
always loathe to remove published stuff that someone might have links
to, even if it's only of historical interest.
These days I only use, and highly recommend, net/jwhois (which, BTW,
doesn't require any external commands :-) Note the package needs
updating to use the new 3.2.3 release, and I find the attached config
file improves greatly on the release version.
