X_WINDOW_SYSTEM is not for pkgsrc -- but is used for FreeBSD ports.
Use X11_TYPE for pkgsrc.
It is documented in the Pkgsrc Guide and briefly documented in
pkgsrc/mk/defaults/mk.conf.
The Pkgsrc Guide is at:
pkgsrc/doc/pkgsrc.txt
pkgsrc/doc/pkgsrc.html
Have fun!
