It it possible to build netpbm on Solaris/x86 witout gas?

It seems netpbm comes with some _asm_ code in a number of .c files that's 
wrapped in "#ifdef GNUC && i386" which is all nice and fine and what I 
have, but I'm using Solaris' assembler (/usr/ccs/bin/as), which doesn't 
like the assembler syntax that that code assumes. :(

Any ideas how to work around this without installing binutils?
