no, I didn't; that's what caused the issue. I solved it with the  
following lines in my mk.conf:

TOOLS_PLATFORM.ar=      /usr/ccs/bin/ar
TOOLS_PLATFORM.ranlib=  /usr/ccs/bin/ranlib
USE_TOOLS+=             ar ranlib
