Yes, I see.  Since there are probably no knobs I can turn to make this
  magically disappear ;)  is there anything else I can do to help troubleshoot
  the problem?

The problem is related to the recent install-clean target changes and
the hairness of make replace.  I spoke to jlam.  I just committed a fix,
and Johnny is working on a longer-term cleanup of make replace.
