this change broke tar on Solaris for me:
# uname -srm
SunOS 5.10 sun4u
# touch test.txt
# ./tar cf test.tar test.txt
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) ./tar cf test.tar test.txt
# file core
core: ELF 32-bit MSB core file SPARC Version 1, from 'tar'
# ls -l core
-rw------- 1 root root 1825103 Oct 29 01:28 core
# mdb ./tar core
