use of REPLACE_PERL in non-Perl packages

Hi,

is it ok to use REPLACE_PERL in packages which do not depend on
lang/perl5 but include some Perl scripts? In other words, can I rely on
REPLACE_PERL in such a case or does it only work by accident?
