boehm-gc and threads

Currently devel/boehm-gc builds without threads on all platforms except
Darwin.  guile 2.0 prerelease (master in git) needs libgc with thread
support.  Is there a reason why thread support is disabled by default,
and why it's different on Darwin?  If not, I would like to make thread
support enable by default.
