I should add that part of my notions come from operating in a mixed
binary/source environment where I have configured the stable repo but
also build things.  I expect some rough edges there, but basically do
not expect the consistency properties that come from a stable bulk build
to necessarily hold.  It's fine if things get a little odd, but I would
like to avoid removal of things I didn't ask to remove.
