Ok, Jared pointed out that (1) the dbus in /var/run is the system one,
which depends on dbus=YES in /etc/rc.conf and probably is unrelated to
this issue; and (2) that my above "yes" was not very clear:
I can log in on the console and run "startxfce4" to bring up a new X server
and then xfce4 works.
However, I can not use startxfce4 in my XDM .xsession file - this ends up
invoking xfce4-session in the end as well, which fails just like the direct
invocation.
Apparently I should do startxfce4 instead of direct xfce4-session invocation,
but for the issue at hand it does not make a difference.
