If I set
MACHINE_ARCH=           x86_64
MACHINE_ARCH.x86_64=    x86_64
GNU_ARCH.x86_64=        x86_64
I get
pkg_add: Warning: package `digest-20121220' was built for a platform:
pkg_add: OpenBSD/x86_64 5.7 (pkg) vs. OpenBSD/amd64 5.7 (this host)
pkg_add: 1 package addition failed

If I set
MACHINE_ARCH=           amd64
MACHINE_ARCH.x86_64=    amd64
GNU_ARCH.x86_64=        amd64
Whatever is set in an if statement that checks
!empty(MACHINE_ARCH:Mx86_64) never runs.
My test being trying to compile x11/libdrm which would add
libpciaccess to the dependency list if the host is x86_64.
