It seems like the big questions on the table are: Is it ok to mix gcc versions for C code? Is it ok to mix gcc versions for C++ code? (It seems not, except in some special cases.) Assuming not, do we want to have a notion of the specified compiler for gcc for c++, and force its use for all c++ programs, with the notion that changing that compiler requires a rebuild of all c++? This could lead to separate variables for GCC_REQD (C) and GXX_REQD (C++, and C++ having a in-list-then-build-else-fail. Or it could lead to a "single compiler for a pkgsrc build" notion.
