Welp, whatever it was, I'll never know.

My system was in need of an upgrade anyway, so after doing a fresh new
install of NetBSD 7.0, the problem no longer presents itself.

I would have liked to have gotten to the bottom of this, but ain't
nobody got time for that, unfortunately.
