I have not experienced this myself, but while coaching a friend through
an update to pkgsrc-2016Q2 on a amd64-7.0_STABLE system, he experienced
just such a hang while building "misc/libreoffice4" (via
pkg_rolling-replace) but apparently not other packages which may have
used 'gmake'.
His ${MAKE_JOBS} was set to "hw.ncpu + 1" (3 in his case). Our workaround
was to comment out the MAKE_JOBS setting in his "/etc/mk.conf" file,
defaulting to 1, after which building "misc/libreoffice4" succeeded.
