You may want to get a copy of "UNIX Systems for Modern architectures:
Symmetric Multiprocessing and Caching for Kernel Programmers"  by Curt
Schimmel, ISBN 0-201-63338-8.  This has lots of details about various
methods of implementing a SMP systems - both the various hardware
schemes and the software schemes used with them.
