Hi,
we have a Dell 6350 with 4 processors which is running 1.5ZA on the SMP=
branch at the moment. I'm not in the office now, so some of this is fr=
om
memory, but I think the gist is accurate.
After fixing the "remap IOAPIC" bug, the SMP kernel mostly works.
However, there is two quirks, one of which I'm concentrating on here. =
I
think this quirk is related to how the PCI busses are configured (by
NetBSD) on this machine, and which renders one of the SCSI controllers
inoperable because NetBSD does not find a match for the device in the M=
P
BIOS table.
The machine is using the 451NX Intel chipset, which provides 3 or 4
primary PCI busses (3 if two of the 4 "PCI expander" channels are
combined to a 64-bit bus, as it is in our case). This is how NetBSD
configures the busses (complete dmesg attached below); the lines are
indented to illustrate "layering":
pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1
pcib0 at pci0 dev 2 function 0
pchb0 at pci0 dev 16 function 0
vga1 at pci0 dev 4 function 0: ATI Technologies Mach64 GI (rev. 0x5c)=
fxp0 at pci0 dev 10 function 0: i82558 Ethernet, rev 5
pchb0: Intel 82451NX Memory & I/O Controller (MIOC) (rev. 0x03)
pchb1 at pci0 dev 18 function 0
pchb1: Intel 82451NX PCI Expander Bridge (PXB) (rev. 0x02)
pchb2 at pci0 dev 19 function 0
pchb2: Intel 82451NX PCI Expander Bridge (PXB) (rev. 0x02)
pci1 at pchb2 bus 1
ahc1 at pci1 dev 4 function 0
ahc2 at pci1 dev 6 function 0
pci_intr_map: bus 1 dev 6 func 0 pin 3; line 10
pci_intr_map: no MP mapping found
isa_intr_establish: no MP mapping found
ahc3 at pci1 dev 8 function 0
pchb3 at pci0 dev 20 function 0
pchb3: Intel 82451NX PCI Expander Bridge (PXB) (rev. 0x02)
pci2 at pchb3 bus 2
The problem, as partially illustrated above and more amply demonstrated=
in the attached dmesg, is that NetBSD doesn't manage to attach the ahc2=
SCSI controller, because the MP mapping table says:
ioapic0: int22 attached to pci1 device 6 INT_A (type 0<type=3D0> flags =
0<pol=3D0,trig=3D0>)
So, why does the PCI code in NetBSD think that the device should use pi=
n
3 (INT_C)? Well, my guess is that this is because NetBSD has decided t=
o
do "swizzling" of the interrupt pins; apparently the code at the end of=
pci_probe_bus() in /sys/dev/pci/pci.c comes into play:
/*
* swizzle it based on the number of
* busses we're behind and our device
* number.
*/
pa.pa_intrpin =3D /* XXX */
((pin + pa.pa_intrswiz - 1) % 4) + 1;
pa.pa_intrswiz is set earlier:
if (bus =3D=3D 0) {
pa.pa_intrswiz =3D 0;
pa.pa_intrtag =3D tag;
} else {
pa.pa_intrswiz =3D sc->sc_intrswiz + device;
pa.pa_intrtag =3D sc->sc_intrtag;
}
and bus is initialized as follows:
bus =3D sc->sc_bus;
near the top of the function. So... since we are not on pci bus number=
0, pa.pa_intrswiz is going to be non-zero, and at least contain the
device number on the PCI bus. If sc->sc_intrswiz is 0 or otherwise
evenly divisible by 4, this can explain why the PCI devices with number=
s
4 and 8 wanting to use PIN_A attach fine, while the device with number =
6
(which also wants to use PIN_A) fails to attach, because the swizzling
ends up indicating PIN_C for that device, and no such entry exists in t=
he
MP mapping table.
I'm uncertain of how this should be fixed. The XXX comment above makes=
me think this is pretty close to where the bug is located. If the
swizzling is only to be performed based on how many pci-to-pci bridges
one have to traverse (as the comment indicates), I would think that the=
bug is actually the test against PCI bus number 0, and the test should
instead be whether the bus in question is a primary bus or not, but as =
to
how to perform that test I don't know.
Comments appreciated (though I won't be able to respond until well over=
this coming weekend).
Regards,
- H=E5vard
