Note that the portability changes (sh style cleanup) had nothing to
do with the issue, which was a straightforward bug in the version of
mksh that OpenBSD (apparently, I don't have it to check) use as /bin/sh

That bug is fixed in later versions of mksh (eg: the one in pkgsrc).

The "fix" for that (to work with the version of mksh in the OpenBSD
version Chris was using) was to make a variation in the way the code was
written to avoid the problem scenario.
