You're forgetting that someone may have non-NetBSD YP clients which
don't support nsswitch.conf/svc.conf.
I have plans for a more generic solution, which involves ypserv
effectively becoming a broker between YP (old clients) and a bunch
of different sources, including local /etc files, local .db files,
DNS (& Hesiod), and anything else you write nsswitch back-ends for.
