That behavior is deprecated.  If you have your /etc/ethers file under
NIS control then you need to modify /etc/nsswitch.conf file to reflect
that.  NetBSD no longer uses the traditional '+' / '-' characters for
NIS.  For more information see nsswitch.conf(5).
