I personally would find it useful if I could bring up my system in
a reasonable amount of time in the face of failure of one of the
machines on my network. 

Sucks when one of my DNS server machines is down and boots of other
machines take tens of minutes. I can deal if I can just get to a
shell prompt.

Yes, I can get around this by booting to single user mode. The problem
then is that to do this I have to generally hard reboot and redo my
fsck's, etc.
