We have always done that, at least for small patches. But this would require
support by the maintainers of the port specific parts which are not in the
XFree86 sources so far. And my requests for this were not succesful in the
part. And because XFree86 4.0's new server framework is mostly useful for
the i386 port I don't expect this to change soon.

They will probably not do it. If they build something on Linux they won't
notice problems on e.g. NetBSD-atari. So we will still have to maintain
the sources but we won't have CVS access there.
IMHO our best chance is to import 4.0 and start porting the non i386 servers
ourselves.
