I am using NetBSD-stable (CVS tag netbsd-3, if I understand correctly). 
The i915 patches were committed to this branch in mid Feb 2006. Are you 
also using -stable?
Makes me wonder if the chipset is being set up correctly by the BIOS, if 
it is not, I guess there is little hope of getting the maker to fix it, 
so a workaround will have to be found.
I'll try -current and perhaps some livecds of Freebsd and Linux to see 
what they throw up.
