What is the recommended practice from xorg?

What do configure scripts out there expect?

Plus, given our binary compatability notions, it should be possible to
unpack xorg sets on a system and not break binaries that use the XFree86
libraries. And to unpack compat sets via pkgsrc. So it seems messy to
be in X11R6, and I like X11R7, but wonder about the consequences.
