No, I've been poking at it for a while now with little success and decided to make config-less operation work first ( that should work with most hardware since last week ). The problem appears to be that somewhere in the unholy mess that is the old autoconfig code a config file is supposed to be generated in memory which is then filtered to leave only references to successfully probed devices in and fixed up to add appropriate sections for multihead etc. This no longer happens for some reason so Xorg - configure fails with 'no devices found'.
