True, but supposedly you can either run an Xserver on top of it or a
wayland server on top of X. The actual compositing stuff is supposedly
done by backends so we can - theoretically at least - provide our own
( and I'd love to do that once the rest is working )
I've read recently that they're planning to bolt something like
that on - but that was on the pixel level, not high-level objects
like with X11.
Clients do communicate with the server through sockets as it is. They
probably rely on shared buffers though.
