While here, perhaps unrelated to the original issue, there are two packages, noto-ttf and noto-emoji-ttf, the latter is supposed to be a subset of the former. However, NotoColorEmoji.ttf font from noto-emoji-ttf is almost twice the size of the same font installed by noto-ttf.
Noto Color Emoji from 2021Q4 is ~5MB; the other one is the latest one from Google, updated for Unicode 14.0--hence the ~9MB size. Both .ttf files contain hundreds of PNG files (do a hexdump -C)--which is why we gotta compile freetype with PNG support. The B&W .ttf files don't have PNG data--which is why they display fine. -RVP
