your guess what was nearly right as I use Debian, but he squeeze
version, so I don't have the paths mangled yet ;)

I did reboostrap pkgsrc on Debian Squeeze today with

X11_TYPE=native
X11BASE=/usr

in /etc/mk.conf

and I could build and run xeyes fine
