It is also used by text processors, such as TeX and emacs, to disambiguate between a period used for an abbrev. vs. a period used to end a sentence, when filling and formatting line breaks. The same applies to consecutive newlines as paragraph breaks. Still off-subject, but (marginally?) less anachronistic. -- Dan.
