Yeah, it's weird.  I almost re-initialized the device, but then I
discovered that an older kernel still successfully discovered it.  I may
have done it wrong, though - but I'm pretty sure I ran 'gpt show
/dev/sd0', and was told there was nothing there.

I see you just removed the bailout from the master branch, now.  Seems
right to me.  I'll be testing it various ways, and I'll let you know if
