I've been using NetBSD on UTM since
NetBSD-current-before-10.0 (now with just vanilla
10.x):

I launch it via this script:

Not sure if this helps you, but I haven't had any
problems performance wise, so comparing your setup
against whatever I have there may help you identify
the issue?
