As of r1.20 of arch/x86/x86/cpu.c, one can do the following:
# cpuctl offline 1
^ do this for all but cpu0
# sysctl -w machdep.sleep_state=3
# cpuctl online 1
^ do this for all but cpu0
and azalia will resume properly as it does with a UP kernel.
Still not a fix, but a much better workaround than running in UP mode.
