 I found the solution to this problem was to enable DRM support by
 compiling the i915drm device into the kernel, and following the other
 steps detailed in drm(4).  So this can be closed, unless it has some
 merit for people who can't or don't want to enable DRM.  (I'd noticed
 the DRM-related errors in the log, but I didn't investigate them
 before because I didn't I'd need that support for anything I do, and
 didn't think it'd be related.  Which shows how little I know about
 recent video cards...)
