 Recently, I found out that if I do a
   chmod g-w /dev/dri/card0
 the problems go away.
 
 I surmise that disables acceleration? I'm not playing games or doing
 anything that graphically intensive.  Everything (videos, firefox...)
 seems to work well enough:

 libGL error: failed to open drm device: Permission denied
 libGL error: failed to load driver: r600
 7697 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1539.375 FPS
 8859 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1771.776 FPS
 8816 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1763.151 FPS
