GIMP 2.6.6 crashing?

Hi,

I just installed GIMP 2.6.6 on NetBSD 5 / i386, but it crashes a lot 
like when trying to access Edit/Preferences, I get

  "assertion \"character != 0\" failed: file \"xdgmimecache.c\", line 462,
  function \"cache_glob_node_lookup_suffix\"\n"

While ktracing GIMP, I also noticed that it reads maybe every single file in
my $HOME, no matter if they are images, configuration files, OO documents
or secret documents.  Not a nice discovery :-p

I built GIMP from pkgsrc sources tagged pkgsrc-2009Q1.  Any ideas?
