For what it is worth, I have a similar problem:
The USB stick was populated with
# dd if=NetBSD-6.0_RC1-i386.iso of=/dev/sd0d bs=4k
I can mount and read the USB stick with
# mount -t cd9660 /dev/sd0a /mnt/sd0a
but I can not boot from it.
The USB stick is a Kingston DT Micro 16GB. From /var/log/messages:
Sep 22 09:18:41 asus /netbsd:
Sep 22 09:18:41 asus /netbsd: umass0: Kingston DT Micro, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2
Sep 22 09:18:41 asus /netbsd: umass0: using SCSI over Bulk-Only
Sep 22 09:18:41 asus /netbsd: scsibus1 at umass0: 2 targets, 1 lun per target
Sep 22 09:18:41 asus /netbsd: sd0 at scsibus1 target 0 lun 0: <Kingston, DT
Micro, PMAP> disk removable
Sep 22 09:18:43 asus /netbsd: sd0: 14996 MB, 3763 cyl, 255 head, 32 sec, 512
bytes/sect x 30712320 sectors
I can boot from other USB sticks, e.g. this one:
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd:
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd: umass1: Kingston DataTraveler 2.0, rev 2.00/1.00,
addr 3
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd: umass1: using SCSI over Bulk-Only
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd: scsibus2 at umass1: 2 targets, 1 lun per target
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd: sd1 at scsibus2 target 0 lun 0: <Kingston,
DataTraveler 2.0, PMAP> disk removable
Sep 22 09:40:19 asus /netbsd: sd1: 7751 MB, 15502 cyl, 32 head, 32 sec, 512
bytes/sect x 15874048 sectors
so I guess the problem is USB stick or BIOS related.
My BIOS is AMIBIOS ASUS V-P5G45 ACPI BIOS Revision 0405.
In the end I burned a CD and used that without any problems.
Kind regards
Ib-Michael
