There are 3 ways to use a disk for a filesystem:

A 4th, which is often easier, is to just format the raw partition e.g. /dev/rccd0d

You will need to know the number of sectors, but then you can use:
newfs -F -I -s <sectors> -f <fsize> -b <bsize> /dev/rccd0d
