 truss -o /tmp/truss.out -e -a -i -f bmake configure
 grep "/dev/null" /tmp/truss.out
 
 If you find a rename(), this is most likely the cause. On my system I 
 got lots of open64() and create64() calls, but I think these were all 
 innocent. Please send the grep(1) output anyway, if it's not too long.
