DS20 confusion
Hey folks,
I recently got an unexpectedly big delivery of AlphaServer DS20 machines
(while I expected something like an alpha station DS10). The machines were
not quite in working order - I'm trying to puzzle them back into shape,
but they are confusing beasts. Maybe someone here has a similar working
machine and can give some hints?
First thing is SCSI confusion. They have an "internal" StorageWorks shelf,
connected apparently via scsi over a small repeater. The cable from the
repeater was not connected. The connector is a bit strange, but the mainboard
has two matching jacks labeled SCSI bus A and SCSI bus B. So I connected it
to scsi a, but it does not show up anywhere. The schematics on the downside
of the top cover seems to imply that it should run to some pci card - which
I don't have.
I aquired a usable single channel scsi card and connected the other scsi
cable (with standard 50 pin connector) to it, and this makes the CD drive
show up in firmware.
I also have a card that apparently should connect to an extern storage works
shelf (which I also have), but this is not seen by firmware either.
I added a few pci network cards, just for testing (and maybe mounting
root on nfs while I can't get a disk working).

Is the DEC "miscellaneous network" device the external storage works
connector card? I can not find any traces of USB, so I guess that is an
error in the pcidevs of that (slightly old) NetBSD version and it actually
is the CONTAQ 82C693 PCI-ISA Bridge.
I guess I should continue hunting for the "right" scsi pci card which can
connect both the storage works repeater and the CD drives scsi bus, or add
another internal scsi disk at the first bus behind the CD drive (there is
space and connectors left).
Can I use some kind of adapter to connect the scsi repeater to a stock
50 pin pci card?
Thanks for any hints,
Martin
