File handle limits and gnome-appearance-properties

Hi,

I'm having strange issues with gnome-appearance-properties and IO  
limits. Most of the time, I can launch the application without  
problems, but the first few "Could not open file" errors show up  
immediately (the ones from capplet-common). Switching to the second  
tab in the application, Background, causes the "Error opening file:  
Too many files" set of warnings (errors?). I can tell from the GUI  
that problems exist, too, in that the Remove button's icon does not  
show up (it's a red X). From here, I performed two different actions  
to get the different outputs below. In the first set of errors, I  
clicked the Add button which crashed the application immediately with  
errors about trying to read .recent-used.xbel and more errors about  
too many files being open. For the second set out output, I clicked  
Close and ran into "I/O error: Too many open files".

While I can also post a bug report if suggested, I thought more  
productive discussion might come if I posted here.

I don't believe the problem is in HAL, as Nautilus works fine, even  
mounting remote SSH drives. It /may/ be related to FAM, although I  
think I configured this directly (I did not use inetd, but simply  
added it to rc.conf and rc.d). Similarly, I doubt it's actually a  
problem with simply having too low of limits.

I'm running NetBSD 4.0.1 with a generic kernel and pkgsrc-current,  
from where I got GNOME 2.24.

Any ideas on what might be causing these file limit problems?
