Just to insert some hard numbers into this thread.

Hardware: Intel Core 2 (Merom), 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, SATA disk
Fresh installation of NetBSD/current with a single filesystem with -o
log, extracting a src tarball and reboot. After that
        build.sh -m amd64 -j4 release
with an installation built with the same option.

After that, reinstallation with a USE_SSP=yes world and run of
        build.sh -m amd64 -j4 -V USE_SSP=yes release

The first took 5803 seconds, the second took 5817 seconds.
