Good call on the iBookHacks option, but it didn't make a difference. The kernel *really* crashes, it doesn't just forget to restore the console properly. For example, when I'm connected via ssh to the box, the connection is dropped when I exit X. When I am playing music via audio/musicpd, audio stops being output (resulting in the typical ugly endless looping of the last 1/2 second or so audio fragment).
